GSA BIM best practices initiative

Autodesk Inc., in partnership with the General Services Administration (GSA), Public Building Service (PBS), and Office of the Chief Architect (OCA), is developing best practices and BIM guidelines for architectural and engineering firms conducting federal civilian design and construction projects.

The current activities are focused on GSA's Spatial Program Building Information Modeling (BIM), and will extend into other areas of building design and construction as the program progresses. This effort is producing significant understandings in the application of Autodesk's BIM authoring tools for federal government projects.

Autodesk is working with the GSA on several BIM pilot projects. The primary test facility has been modeling the GSA's national headquarters building at 1800 F Street N.W. Washington D.C. This project examines the creation and use of a spatial program BIM with Autodesk™ Revit to meet the GSA space program requirements and to exercise the interoperability of BIM data via Industry Foundation Class (IFC) data exchange procedures.

The partnership with the GSA forms a standard and repeatable methodology for modeling that validates GSA Net and Design Gross Area's, as well as additional ANSI/BOMA calculations. This process creates a verifiable BIM deliverable for architectural and engineering firms designing federal government projects.

Autodesk applauds the work of the GSA and continues to be an engaged partner in the pursuit of time and cost savings through effective BIM implementations and interoperability standards.
